Protect Your Holiday Cheer

Stay alert this holiday season and beware of holiday scams.  As a reminder, never share your personal info via email or text.  Here's a look at some common scams that tend to show up during the holiday buying season, and ways to protect yourself, whether you shop online or in-store:

Fake Online Stores

What is it?

Fraudulent websites lure in shoppers with unbelievable discounts, then steal payment details or fail to deliver items.

How do I avoid it?
  • Verify that URLs start with "https://" for secure browsing.

  • Research the retailer, especially if it's unfamiliar.

  • Stick to trusted stores and avoid ads from unknown sources.

Phony Charities

What is it?

Scammers posing as charities reach out to request donations for fake causes, preying on holiday goodwill.

How do I avoid it?
  • Verify legitimate charities on websites like Charity Navigator or BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

  • Don't donate through unsolicited calls or emails.

  • Visit the charity's official website and donate through their portal.

Gift Card Scams

What is it?

Scammers posing as charities reach out to request donations for fake causes, preying on holiday goodwill.

How do I avoid it?
  • Buy a card directly from a retailer or bank.

  • Avoid third-party gift card sellers.

  • Check for tempering, like scratched-off PINS, and keep your receipts for proof of purchase.

Porch Pirates and Fake Shipping Notifications

What is it?

Thieves steal packages from doorsteps and send fake text or email notifications to trick people into giving personal information.

How do I avoid it?
  • Schedule deliveries when you'll be home or use secure delivery lockers.
  • Track packages only through official carrier or retailer websites, not links in texts or emails.

Holiday Travel Scam

What is it?

Scammers offer too-good-to-be-true travel deals, requiring upfront payments that disappear.

How do I avoid it?
  • Book travel through well-known sites and agencies.

  • Be cautious of requests for wire transfers or gift card payments.

In-Store Card Skimming

What is it?

Skimmers capture card info at ATMs and store registers, allowing thieves to make unauthorized purchases.

How do I avoid it?
  • Set up account alerts for purchases through digital banking so you can quickly identify any suspicious transactions.

  • Inspect card readers for unusual bulk or loose parts before swiping.

General Fraud Prevention Tips

In addition to staying aware of common holiday scams, following these general fraud prevention practices can help keep your information secure all year long:

  • Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Avoid reusing passwords across accounts, and create complex passwords that combine letters, numbers, and symbols.

  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security to your accounts by enabling MFA, which requires additional forms of identification beyond just a password.

  • Monitor Your Accounts Regularly: Check your bank and credit card accounts frequently to spot any unauthorized transactions early.  Report suspicious activity immediately.
  • Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi: Avoid accessing sensitive information, such as online banking, when connected to public Wi-Fi.  Use a secure, Private network or a VPN when possible.
  • Limit the Personal Information You Share: Refrain from sharing sensitive data like Social Security numbers or financial details over email, text or social media.

Stay vigilant this season to protect your holiday cheer! If you fall victim to a scam or suspect fraudulent activity, notify your financial institution immediately.
